Albergue Casa Jalou offers beds in 4-bed female and 6-bed mixed dormitories, each with privacy curtains and high-quality IKEA mattresses with moisture protection covers. Lockers and fresh towels are provided free of charge; guests receive a bed number on booking or are asked to take a freshly made bed. The women's dormitory is small, and upper bunks have narrow metal ladders.
Bathrooms & Cleanliness
The hostel has three deluxe bathrooms for approximately 12-14 guests, each with two shower heads offering two different water flow types. A working bidet is present in the reception bathroom; the other two bidets do not function. Volunteer Lucas cleans daily, and guests describe the showers as having plenty of hot water and the facility as extremely clean.
Common Areas & Atmosphere
The property includes a shared lounge, a TV area, a dining space, and a rooftop terrace where smoking is not allowed-making it the only hostel on the island with a smoke-free roof terrace. Quiet hours begin at 10pm, and the hostel is described as calm with mostly guests over 30years old. Recycling of all waste, including compost, is practiced on site.
Services
The owner, Lazero, lives in Agaete and visits the hostel regularly to ensure operations run smoothly. Manager Mónica lives 30minutes away and is rarely on site, but responds via WhatsApp. Volunteer Luis speaks seven languages fluently and is noted for his engaging conversations with guests; volunteer Lucas maintains cleanliness and assists with check-in.
Location
Casa Jalou is situated in Agaete's old town, a 17-minute walk from Playa Dedo de Dios natural pools and a 10-minute walk from a well-stocked supermarket. The church next door rings bells occasionally, even late in the evening. Nearby attractions include Cueva Pintada Museum (9km) and Parque de Santa Catalina (34km); Gran Canaria Airport is 54km away.
